Winter Solstice

I am going to an event tonight to celebrate the Winter Solstice.  Part of the evening features a film called “What About Me?”  Described in part here:

This visionary project visits over 50 locations in an exploration through music, the complexities of human nature on a global scale, and reveals how we are all connected through our creativity and beliefs, but most of all through our madness.

The film will cover topics such as Covering universal topics such as God, Sex, Death and Money.   There will be music, dance performances and visual arts.  Visit the site here if you are interested.

The Persistence of Yellow

Longtime readers know I took a break from work, the world, my life and friends last year.  Months actually.  I have been back at work just over a year now.

While off work I made some big changes and some subtle changes.  I wanted to take advantage of the life I am blessed with.  I wanted to give back to the people I love and I wanted to look after myself and my community more.  Somewhere along the way, I forgot some of the things I learned.

Negativity can seep in.  Like any other bad habit negativity can sneak up on you and make you look at things different than they really are.  It is a matter of changing your thinking.  I did a lot of that this year.  Training my brain to look at situations differently.  Sometimes I failed, and sometimes the brilliance of it shone through.  It does work.  Granted, life is hard but sometimes I make it harder than it needs to be.

I’ve slipped a little in the last month.  Like any other bad habit you need to keep reworking it.  Learn.  Try. Encourage yourself.  I am reminded to do these things – for myself.  I am better for everyone around me when I look after myself.

Here is a snippet that I re-read today.  A snippet from The Persistence of Yellow – a gift from a wise friend.  The date on the jacket cover is November 2007.

Here are two passages that I wanted to share.

Once upon a time, a girl prayed for true love.

Her prayer was answered.  She learned to love herself.

And:

He offered her the world.

She said she had her own.

mid December stuff

in bullet form (sorry):

  • The car that Junior and I were passengers in today had a little mishap:  The wheel fell off!  Yes, you read that right!  Thankfully we were almost home and we are all safe and sound …
  • My neighbourhood is a winter wonderland!  Junior loves the snow!
  • Junior does not love the gorgeous neighbour lady’s doggie.   It changes his normally gentle loving personality into a snarling tiger.  Still not scary but definitely distracting pretty neighbour lady from mommy’s witty hallway banter!  Bad Junior!
  • You can buy cotton candy in a bucket at Blockbuster.  You may think this isn’t important but one day in the future you will be craving that sugar cloud and thinking where the heck do I get that (outside of fairgrounds) and you will remember where and thank NerdGirl later.
  • I love t.v. You know that, but it seems like each season of my favourite old shows or my new faves only have five to ten new episodes and immediately hit reruns for the remainder of winter!  gah!
  • NerdGirl doesn’t know what Twitter is – need to find out.  Apparently all the cool kids are twittering instead of instant messaging (feel free to educate me!).
  • Our skating club hosted a synchro skating gala yesterday.  The girls skated beautifully and the club made lots of money towards the food bank (Surrey).
  • Im am almost done xmas shopping.  Almost!
  • Gossip Girl is on (rerun of course!) so I have to run.  One last thought:

The  Furry Family and I need to have a discussion about sleeping arrangements.
